The Fergusson-Ackland Mouth Gag offers a broad range of surgical advantages. Its principal use is to keep the mouth from closing without damaging the temporomandibular joint.

For this purpose, the instrument features serrated tooth plates that easily interlock with incisors, canines of premolars. In addition, the device is available in 14.5 and 18.0cm sizes to accommodate a variety of dental arches.

Moreover, the Fergusson-Ackland Mouth Gag features a plier grip style handle with a spring system and ratcheted stems. As a result, surgeons can press the device to adjust the ratchet ring at the desired position to control the jaws opening.
