The Tarnier Basiotribe is a unique surgical device developed by Etienne Stephane Tarnier in 1883. Its principal purpose is to perforate, collapse, and facilitate the extraction of the fetal head after fetal demise, similar to cranioclasts.

For these purposes, the instrument features two concave, oval tongs which meet at an angle. Also, these tongs include fenestrations and their curves easily follow the contour of the fetal head. Additionally, the device has a central plunger between the tongs supplied with a sharp blade to crush the skull.

Moreover, the Tarnier Basiotribe features a compound joint equipped with a lock system. In addition, the handle includes a large screw with a wing nut, which surgeons use to adjust the position of the tongs. As a result, surgeons can rotate the wing nut to tighten the blades and elevate the plunger.
